Preparing to Vote in the Primary Election Cycle

Broward County, FL. (January 12, 2016)

Florida voters should prepare themselves to participate in the first election of the 2016 Election Cycle. This election is the Presidential Preference Primary, where eligible voters will be able to cast their vote for the presidential nominee for the Democratic or Republican Party.  A voter is eligible to cast a vote for the party nominee if he/she is a member of the Democratic or Republican Party.

Because Florida is a closed primary state, voters who are registered as independent, no party affiliation, or with a minor party affiliation are not eligible to cast a ballot for the party nominee.

A voter may change party affiliation by submitting a written request to the Supervisor of Elections’ Office. The written request must be received at least 29 days before the election, and specify the new party selection.  The last date to request a party change is February 16, 2016. The change may remain in effect throughout the election cycle which ends following the general election in November 2016.

Voters who do not change their party affiliation will be eligible to vote in other races on the ballot which are considered non-partisan.  Voters who live in the following municipalities will be able to vote for the candidates as well as issues on the ballot of the particular municipality. Municipalities on the ballot are Davie, Hillsboro Beach, Lauderdale- By-The Sea, Oakland Park, and Pembroke Pines.
